Character Biography
George floated listlessly beneath the immense, dark ocean. Far above him, light danced and flickered about. Sunlight? Moonlight? It didn’t matter, Geroge knew it wasn’t the light he was supposed to go to, but, towards the darkness, towards the abyss. He heard it, the wistful hymn of the sea. It called to him and he felt compelled to follow. So, into the depths, George went. Swimming into that primordial place, that nucleus of nascency, where all was once one, back in time, down, down, he followed the song.
Far now, from the shimmering lights that bore the false promise of freedom, down here, in the dark, where George no longer needed eyes to see, ever pursuing that ephemeral anthem, he swam. He swam for what seemed like an endless amount of time. As he did, George began to witness the very beginnings of life coalesce around him. Single-celled organisms surrounded him in uncountable numbers. The swirling constellation of life dividing again and again and again, each time becoming more and more complex until he found himself afloat above a vast barren plane of white sand, embossed with an endlessly repeating pattern of gentle, low ripples, and before him, a vast multitude of sea creatures of all shapes and sizes. George could recognize many of them, but many still he found to be strange and frightening. The creatures floated in silence; that ethereal melody that had drawn him hither had ceased, and before him, for what seemed an eternity, they stared, with implacable eyes whose architecture took on every configuration imaginable.
Slowly at first but with increasing tempo, one by one the creatures began to turn belly up or simply fall limp. A thick unctuous blood seeping from their mouths and other orifices until all the sea had turned a dark crimson. He could taste it now, the salty and metallic deluge had begun invading his lungs. George was drowning in this most vital fluid. He thrashed and he kicked and just when he thought his lungs would burst…
